If you’re a woman over 50, there’s a very good chance that you too suffer with the dreaded nocturnal need to pee! Whilst it’s somewhat manageable (although always annoying) in the comfort of your own home where you can stumble through half closed eyes along the familiar and well trod route to the loo, it’s a whole different ball game when camping! Here we delve into the best camping toilet options for when you’re on the road, and we have road-tested a couple of these so you don’t have to!
Your choices will obviously depend on your set up and of course, budget. We will have a look at the whole spectrum of the best camping toilet options – from the cheapest through to the more expensive flushing options, and a couple of others in between.
As always, we value your experience and opinions! If you have trialled any of our best camping toilet options, let us know what YOU think! We’d love to hear your feedback!
She-Wee
We found this to be the quickest and easiest of our best camping toilet options for wees when on the road, but be warned, you’ll need some practice!
So what is a She-Wee? For those women who have always been a tad jealous of blokes being able to wee standing up, then this is the option for you! It is a funnel shaped device that enables you to wee standing up, and without having to remove your clothes or underwear. Read all about it here.
We trialled this by using an empty laundry detergent bottle (large opening!) in conjunction with the she-wee and then discreetly emptying in a public toilet when required. If you’re free camping and can’t access a dump point, we suggest trying this to lessen the amount of wee-age in your self-contained vehicle.
Bucket N Litter
Another cheap and cheerful addition to our list of best camping toilet options is the simple bucket, garbage bag and cat litter. While I’ve heard a lot of ladies using this option, it’s not for us! Bags need to be emptied quite regularly, so there’s the whole ‘disposal’ palaver as well as the ‘plastic bag killing dolphins’ argument.
No link for this….just go to Bunnings! You’ll find buckets, bags and litter!
Folding Toilet
The one we tested, the Drifta, was actually from the US and used in the field by Marines. It’s a great solution if you feel the need to sit (unlike the she wee that is used while standing). It folds into a small briefcase sized arrangement and is comfortable to use. However, again there is the plastic bag problem to manage. The ‘litter’ involved with this set up is crystals, again, not so great for the environment. It is however very good at soaking up liquids, so the bag would not need to be changed as much as normal litter/sawdust. For this reason we are adding it to our list of best camping toilet options.
Thetford Cassette Toilet
We have a Thetford Cassette toilet built in to our Coaster bus. While it is easy and convenient to use, there is still a limit to how many days free camping you can do without emptying the cassette. Caravanners have the luxury of being able to take the cassette for a drive to empty at a dump point in their tow vehicle. For those in a Coaster Bus, Motorhome, Campervan or RV, it’s a pain to have to pack up and drive to a dump point every couple of days to empty the cassette.
So, What Is The Best Camping Toilet Option For Bus Life?
We have found that using a combination of the She-Wee and the Thetford cassette toilet allows us a few days before we need to deal with the cassette.
Good luck and go well my fellow nocturnal pee-ers!
