Be Smart – Stay Safe on the Road

Adventures are exciting! If you are on your own though, there are some safety tips for Toyota Coaster solo travellers that you need to consider.

I am lucky enough to have a job that I can do from anywhere, as long as I have access to the internet. This gives me the freedom to take off on mid week solo adventures for a few days when my schedule permits. An average work day with a view of the beach or a river beats a good day in the office any day!

While the freedom of solo travel is exhilarating, it comes with its own set of challenges, particularly when it comes to safety. Over the years, I’ve learned valuable lessons and developed a few strategies to ensure my safety while embracing the nomadic lifestyle. In this blog post, I’ll share my top safety tips for Toyota Coaster solo travellers.

1. Research and Planning

Before embarking on any journey, thorough research and meticulous planning are essential. Familiarise yourself with your route, including potential hazards, weather conditions, and safe camping spots along the way. Prepare yourself for different scenarios.

  • How will you navigate if you lose access to Google Maps?
  • What will you do if bad weather sets in?
  • What will you do if you lose access to the internet?
  • How long should it take to get to your destination?
  • Are there any alternate routes available in case of emergency?
  • Where are petrol stations located?

Utilise online resources, travel forums, and apps specifically designed for travellers to gather information and stay updated on road conditions. The Wikicamps app is a popular option giving you the location and reviews of thousands of camping spots. It will also show you day use areas, public dump points, info centres and various points of interest.

2. Trust Your Instincts

As a solo traveller, your intuition is your most valuable asset. The most important of the safety tips for Toyota Coaster solo travellers is to trust your gut feelings and instincts when assessing unfamiliar situations or encountering strangers. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s better to err on the side of caution and remove yourself from the situation.

Gut feelings and intuition are actually encoded in our DNA thanks to our ancestors who relied upon them to keep themselves safe from dangerous animals hundreds of thousands of years ago. These days they can still help us avoid danger, although more the human kind of danger than dangerous animals. Disregard your gut instincts and intuition at your peril!

3. Stay Connected

Maintaining communication with loved ones and fellow travellers is crucial for both safety and peace of mind. Invest in reliable communication devices such as a mobile phone, satellite phone, or satellite tracking device to stay connected, especially in remote areas with limited signal coverage.

The satellite tracking device that I use is the Spot Tracker that has served me well for a few years. You will need to purchase the device first and then a subscription (The subscription can be suspended when you are not using it). It has the ability to send preselected messages to your loved ones, as well as emergency services when required. Also remember to share your itinerary with a family member or friend, and establish regular check-ins to ensure your safety.

4. Secure Your Motorhome

Protecting your living space is paramount when travelling solo. Invest in high-quality locks for doors and windows, and consider installing additional security measures such as motion-sensor lights or an alarm system. Park in well-lit areas or designated campgrounds whenever possible, and avoid isolated or sketchy locations, especially after dark.

Another tip is to carry a pair of mens boots with you and place them outside the door (next to yours) whilst you are camping. This makes it less obvious that you are a solo camper. Most importantly, double check that everything is locked before going to sleep at night. I am guilty of leaving doors accidently unlocked at night and there really is no excuse for it. Have a checklist that you tick off every night before bed.

5. Be Aware of Your Surroundings

Vigilance is one of the key safety tips for Toyota Coaster solo travellers. Stay alert and aware of your surroundings at all times, especially in unfamiliar or potentially risky environments. Practice situational awareness and scan your surroundings for any signs of danger or suspicious activity. Trust your senses and be prepared to react swiftly if necessary. Alcohol and recreational drugs can be enjoyable when you are camping but you need to keep your wits about you so use them responsibly if at all.

6. Learn Self Defence

While it’s always preferable to avoid confrontations whenever possible, knowing basic self-defence techniques can provide an added layer of protection. It will also help to give you peace of mind and confidence in your surroundings. Consider taking a self-defence class or workshop to learn essential skills for defending yourself in emergency situations. It is also great for your physical fitness! Carry pepper spray or a personal alarm as non-lethal deterrents, and be prepared to use them if threatened.

7. Build a Support Network

Solo travel doesn’t mean you have to go it alone. Cultivate a network of fellow travellers, both online and in person, who can offer advice, assistance, and camaraderie along the way. Join solo travellers clubs or social media groups to connect with like-minded individuals and share experiences.

Coaster Sisters, Toyota Coaster Lovers of Australia, Toyota Coaster Lovers Living the Dream  are some popular examples.  Having a supportive community can provide invaluable support and companionship during your journey. There is also the benefit of travel tips and ideas from like-minded people to help you get the most out of your adventure.

8. Practice Emergency Procedures

Prepare for the unexpected by equipping yourself with essential emergency supplies and knowledge. Stock your Toyota Coaster Motorhome with a transistor radio, first aid kit, emergency food and water, blankets, torch, fire extinguisher, fire blanket and other survival gear.

Familiarise yourself with basic emergency procedures, such as how to respond to medical emergencies, vehicle breakdowns, or inclement weather conditions. Monitor bush fire alerts, flooding and other emergency information by listening to local radio broadcasts whilst you are driving or during your camping trip. I use the CFS Scan app on my phone for this purpose when I have internet access.

Make sure you have an evacuation plan in case you need it. Being prepared is another one of the key safety tips for Toyota Coaster solo travellers.

9. Trustworthy Navigation

Reliable navigation is essential for safe and stress-free travel. Invest in a GPS navigation device or use a smartphone app such as Google Maps or Maps. Plan your routes in advance and stay updated on road closures, construction zones, and other potential obstacles that may impact your journey.

10. Embrace Continuous Learning

Safety is an ongoing process, and there’s always something new to learn and discover along the way. Stay informed about best practices for solo travel and Motorhome travel by reading books, blogs, and articles written by experienced travellers. Attend workshops, seminars, or Caravan and Camping expos to learn from experts and connect with fellow enthusiasts. Embrace a mindset of continuous learning and improvement to enhance your safety and enjoyment of the open road.
