A Guide to Travelling with your Cat in a Toyota Coaster
Travelling with your Cat? Yes or No?
Cats are the ultimate independent adventurers and it is getting more common to see them on the road with their Toyota Coaster owners these days.
I have two cats, one continuously cries when we put her anywhere near a vehicle, and the other one is prone to anxiety so would need to be fully medicated to take on a camping adventure. Personally, there is no way I would put either of them in our Toyota Coaster and take them camping! Each to their own though, and if you want to go travelling with your pet cat, here is your checklist to keep them safe and happy:
The Travelling with your Cat Checklist
1. Comfortable Space: Create a cosy nook for your cat in the motorhome. Use a familiar bed or blanket to help them feel at home. Ensure they have access to a litter box, food, and water. Outside the motorhome, you can purchase enclosed play pens that are ideal for cats.
2. Secure Travel: Cats should be transported in a secure carrier while driving. This prevents them from roaming and ensures their safety in case of sudden stops.
3. Gradual Acclimation: Cats can be sensitive to changes. Gradually introduce them to the motorhome before your trip. Allow them to explore and get comfortable with the new environment.
4. Stress Reduction: Use calming products like pheromone sprays or diffusers to reduce travel-related stress. Feliway works a treat for our two cats. Playing soft music can also help create a soothing atmosphere.
5. Identification: Ensure your cat has a collar with an ID tag. Microchipping is recommended for added security. Keep your cat indoors or on a leash when outside to prevent them from getting lost.
Best Places to Camp with Cats
1. Cat-Friendly Caravan Parks: Some caravan parks are cat-friendly and offer enclosed areas for cats to explore safely. Check for parks with good reviews and amenities that cater to feline needs.
2. Quiet Locations: Cats prefer calm environments. Look for campsites away from busy areas to minimize stress and noise.
3. Enclosed Spaces: Consider campsites with cabins or fenced areas where your cat can roam without the risk of escaping.
Pros and Cons of Travelling with your Cat
Pros:
- Comfort: Cats are low-maintenance and can comfortably adapt to small spaces.
- Cleanliness: Cats groom themselves, reducing the need for regular baths.
- Companionship: Cats can be affectionate and provide companionship during quiet moments.
Cons:
- Stress: Cats can be more prone to stress from travel and new environments.
- Limited Outdoor Time: Cats require supervision when outside, limiting their outdoor freedom.
- Litter Box Maintenance: Managing a litter box in a confined space can be challenging.
The choice is yours!
Ultimately, no-one knows your feline companion like you do. Cats are such independent souls, and just like their human counterparts, some will love travelling and others will hate it. Travelling with your cat can add to your adventures, having your pet by your side for companionship and not having to worry about finding a pet sitter. It also has its draw backs and it is up to you to weigh it all up.
